First, I want to thank everyone for the outpouring of love, support and prayers. Second, I ask that you keep it coming full force. We knew that even with a successful surgery yesterday that the situation was going to be unpleasant and any recovery very, very difficult.
During what was planned to be a 10 hour surgery, which would remove the cancer from Gramps' esophagus; along with removing his voice box and leave him breathing through a tracheotomy tube; there were complications. Once inside, doctors determined that the cancer had spread to his liver. At that point, although they had already begun the surgery, surgeons opted to not move forward with any more of the procedure as planned. They were unable to remove the cancer. Thankfully they had not already removed his voice box. At this time, we still have not spoken to the doctors about a potential plan for moving forward, but we are hoping to speak with one of the surgeons this evening. We will try to keep family and friends up to date as much as possible, as information becomes available.
We are incredibly grateful that the surgeons had not removed his voice box prior to discovering that the fast moving cancer had spread to his liver. Gramps is awake and alert, and has been talking up a storm with all of us. And despite his wounds, he is relatively comfortable. I stayed the night with him in the ICU last night. He was chatting with his wonderful nurse all night long. His entire family has been by his side throughout.
There is a chance that he might be moved from the ICU to an intermediate care room later this evening. With that said, we are in for one hell of a fight; the fight of our lives. Keep the prayers, thoughts and positivity coming, as we hope and pray that there may be some form of treatment for this horrible disease. We all love this guy as much as anything in the world. He's a fighter and he's willing to keep up the fight.
